Understanding the needs and expectations of end users is an essential step in the development of new healthcare technologies. Market validation studies help ensure that innovative solutions are aligned with clinical practice and address the challenges faced by both healthcare professionals and patients.
To better understand the potential of regenerative therapies for companion animals, Fetalix conducted surveys involving 336 dog owners and 54 veterinarians, gathering insights into the management of canine back pain and the acceptance of novel biomaterial-based treatments.
The results revealed a strong interest in innovative regenerative approaches among both groups. While only 6% of veterinarians reported being familiar with fetal biomaterials for intervertebral disc regeneration, 96% indicated they would be receptive to incorporating a new biomaterial into their treatment protocol. Among dog owners, 87% said they would be receptive to a new biomaterial to treat their dog's back pain, while 81% would be open to its use as a preventive intervention.
The surveys also highlighted the factors that would influence the adoption of these therapies. Dog owners identified safety (84%), cost (67%), and treatment efficacy (66%) as their main considerations when choosing a new treatment. Likewise, veterinarians ranked efficacy (91%), cost-benefit (81%), and safety (70%) among the most important factors when evaluating new biomaterial-based therapies. In addition, 91% of veterinarians and 63% of dog owners expressed a willingness to pay more for a treatment that offered greater effectiveness than current options.
These findings provide valuable insight into the expectations of both clinicians and pet owners and will help guide the continued development of Fetalix's veterinary strategy.
