The PhD research of our co-founder, Morena Francesca Fiordalisi, was published in Biomaterials Advances. The study investigates how the age of the donor tissue used to derive extracellular matrix (ECM) biomaterials influences intervertebral disc regeneration.

The research demonstrates that ECM materials derived from younger, and particularly fetal, sources create a more supportive biological environment for disc cells. This environment enhances the cells’ ability to restore key structural components required for healthy intervertebral disc function. In addition, the study shows that fetal-derived matrices can reduce abnormal blood vessel formation, a process closely associated with disc degeneration and chronic low back pain.
